The abbreviation SUV stands for Sport Utility Vehicle. SUVs are great for driving in the mountains, traveling on dirt roads, driving through shallow water and on grassy terrain. Even though SUVs are built for off-road driving, they still handle great on highways and during city driving. Current sales for the SUV have plummeted due to the bad condition of the economy. These days, thanks to higher gas prices, everyone is feeling the sting at the pump.
The interior of an SUV is very spacious and some can carry up to seven passengers. They have a lot of leg room and the trunk is usually large enough to carry big objects such as surf boards, luggage and furniture. SUVs come in all shapes and sizes; from extra large like the Ford Excursion, midsized like the Ford Escape and small like the Honda Element.
The future of the SUV is looking to be very promising. Since society is now engaged in a campaign to save the planet, the automotive industry has heeded the call for more environmentally friendly vehicles. These new type of vehicles are called “hybrid vehicles." Hybrids come in a variety of different vehicle types. These include a car version, SUV version and even a truck-styled version. What gives these new vehicles their appeal? They get better gas mileage and release less pollution and CO2 emissions into the ozone layer. Hybrids are breathing new life into the old SUV and giving us a reason to celebrate its bright and successful future.
