There is a new revolution that has taken a certain sect of the population by storm. Texting is the way to have conversation with friends or family now, rather than emailing or actually having a phone conversation with someone.
A recent study by a major service provider shows that for those between the age of 15 and 30, texting is the most convenient way to keep in touch or to confirm information. To many adults, they consider it to be like playing a back-and-forth code game. To teens and young adults, it is a quick and cheap way to share simple information. It is a form of communicating using cellular shorthand. Most phones come with the capability of finishing a word when you enter only the first few letters called T9.
Texting has become so popular that it brought about the new design of many cell phones. Some are made now with mini keypads rather than the original numeric buttons. Subscribers sent approximately 1 trillion text messages in 2008. That is three times the amount sent in 2007. That shows how much it has gained in popularity in one short year. One of the early drawbacks of text messaging was the cost per message, but now most service providers offer plans that include unlimited text messages. This is a good thing, because studies show that on an average, teens send and/or receive approximately 1,700 text messages in a month’s time.
It has been said that today’s young people will be very technologically savvy, but will lack the skills needed to be able to carry on a professional conversation. In some cases however, texting is cheaper than running over your minutes, so maybe it is a smarter way to relay basic information.
