Seven years ago, Fox Television Network debuted a reality based show which mirrored a show in Europe, entitled "Pop Idol." The American version's objective is to find the best singer in the country. The age group of the contestants are between 18 and 29. The name of the show is "American Idol."
The show is in its ninth season, as it continues to attract a viewing audience in the millions. The eventual winner receives a million dollar recording contract. Auditions take place in various cities across the U.S. The contestants that pass their initial auditions go on to Hollywood for further auditions. During the first three seasons, the semifinalists fell into groups of three. Of the three groups, only the top three contestants advanced. In the other two seasons, the groups were split into eight contestants each, and the two top singers advanced. Viewers would call in their votes until a winner was chosen.
The next four seasons, 24 finalists were equally separated as either male and female. Each week of competition, the bottom two were eliminated. The eventual winner was chosen through viewer input.
Last season, there were 36 finalists. Each week a group of 12 would perform and the following night, only three would be left. One male, one female, and the third highest vote would be left. To add to the competition, three wild card contestants were brought back that had been previously voted off. An eventual winner was selected. To spice things up, a fourth judge has been added for season nine, Kara DioGuardi.
