Recent Developments In Solar Energy Technologies

The worldwide alert about global warming has brought the need for alternative energy to the forefront of public awareness. Solar energy is one of the most studied options. Initially, solar energy was approached on a high-tech and expensive scale. As scientists learned more, better economical developments have hit the market.

One of the most popular items are solar lights. They are commonly seen along outdoor walkways where electric lights were used. These little lights each have their own solar panel that absorbs light throughout the day. When the sun goes down, they are self-activated to illuminate. They use no electricity and emit no harmful gases into the atmosphere the way regular bulbs do. The light they produce is comparable to a low wattage bulb and for walkway use they’re great because they don’t over light an area. Now that this technology has caught on, manufacturers are coming out with all kinds of different styles and adding garden lights shaped like animals or lanterns. There are indoor lights as well, but these must be near a window. These lights are also efficient in cloudy weather. As long as they get some sunshine, they will still light up at night.

Another recent addition to the solar technology craze is a portable solar panel that can be used to power a laptop computer. If you’re traveling in your car or walking in a park and your laptop battery dies, you can roll out the very thin solar sheet and put it on the dash of your car or lay it on the ground and it will give power to your laptop as long as there is sun to be drawn into it. It is still on the expensive side, but people who feel they must have their laptop at all times are loving it.

The sun is an endless source of power if we can seriously tap into it, we will reap more benefits than we really know. Each day scientists are finding ways to use solar energy for average household products at a price the consumer can afford.
