Job Market and Newly Graduated Student

Even if you graduate from a 4-year college with a diploma, the job market is not good. 2009 graduates are looking at one of the toughest job markets in history or so the experts think. National Association of Colleges (NACE) says employers have increased their college student hiring by only 1.3% over last year. Sounds pretty dismal if you are ready to graduate this spring; however, there are companies ready to look at new recruits.

Employers can be choosy and will screen out anyone who has less than 3.0 grade point averages and will weed out graduates that do not have relevant work experience. Employers are looking to find which graduates have leadership skills and whether they took charge. The best way to address that is to have your resume point out the facts of leadership qualities to the hiring company. While hiring numbers are down, there is a continual need of nurses so health care is a very good avenue even in dwindling job markets.

Health care is not the only strong market for jobs, as information technology is holding its own for hiring students. As job searches increase, widen your range of opportunities beyond the government and health care industries. Look for openings in the manufacturing side of the job market. Discount retailers and budget-friendly eateries have their doors open as well. Stay away from employment websites and job fairs as your only option. Get out and get the word circulating that you are actively seeking employment.
