Wind-Generated Electricity

Wind-generated electricity is a clean and renewable resource that is very environmentally friendly. This form of energy is a concept that has been around for more than 5,000 years; historically, it has been used to generate power water pumps that irrigate farms, to power grist mills and drive sailboats. In the Unites States, windmills began being applied to electrical generation in the early 1980s, but they were not cost effective at about 35 cents per kilowatt hour. Evolving technology and higher demand will eventually make wind-generated power more affordable and much more desirable.

Wind-generated electricity that can produce one megawatt of electricity will provide enough power for up to 24 million homes. As the government moves to make clean coal technology for the country’s coal burning power plants, many of these plants are looking at wind power, in addition to other sources of electricity generators to replace its coal burning practices.

Wind turbines are currently available for homeowners to generate enough power to operate their homes. Depending on the usage of your home some of these turbines can generate more power than you can use, and you can conceivably sell the excess to the power company. To sell excess power to your local electric company, however, you will require more equipment. The cost of your own wind turbine can be economical to expensive depending on what equipment you choose. Research on your particular needs is highly advised.

The potential of wind-generated electricity is mind boggling. Wind power is being used more and more in Germany, Spain, the U.S. and many other countries around the world, yet this technology is still a baby. Keep an eye out to the future for more usage of wind-generated power.
