Solar Energy

Solar energy research was boosted from one million dollars to four hundred million dollars. This increase was prompted by the possibility of insufficient oil resources. Our sun has been producing solar energy since it was formed billions of years ago by the process of fusion.

There are two methods of converting this solar energy into usable electricity; photovoltaic cells and solar power plants. Photovoltaic cells also known as "solar cells" and are connected to an electrical grid that changes sunlight directly into electricity. Solar power plants generate the electricity indirectly from the cells to heat liquids and produce steam.

Possibly the most common use of solar energy would be to use it as a power source. Households ran on solar power have solar collectors on their roof. During the daytime hours the households are ran directly from the solar collectors. During nighttime hours the households are ran from power stored in solar cell batteries.

Another common use for solar power is for heating water. Heated swimming pools are also heated by solar power by running water through tubes, absorbing the sun's heat directly, and then pumping it into the pool. Water heated for the household is generated using solar panels and water running through tubes wrapped around a water tank, transferring the sun's heat directly into the water. Using solar energy helps save our environment by reducing our use and dependence on fossil fuels. Of course, the downside is that the sun is not consistent. Factors to consider include the time of day, seasons, and weather conditions.
