The baseball season is back in swing as spring training has started for all teams in the MLB. Spring training is considered to be a mini warmup season for the professional teams to see what players they will want on their full time roster for the regular season. So what has happened so far during spring training? Have there been any surprises, trades, recent signings, etc? Actually, yes, this spring training has been filled with news.
Probably the most surprising news so far this spring training is the fact that Alex Rodriguez, the home run slugger for the New York Yankees, has been charged with using illegal steroids in the 2003 season. This came as a huge shock to many players, coaches, and fans because of how Rodriguez pledged that he had never used steroids in his career. On top of that, Rodriguez will be having surgery on his hip to remove a cyst that will keep him out of the lineup for up to ten weeks. This is a big blow to the Yankees, as Rodriguez has led the team in home runs and RBI's the past few seasons.
Slugger Manny Ramirez was holding out on the Los Angeles Dodgers trying to get an improved contract until he finally decided to sign with them for a hefty sum of money over two years. Meanwhile, New York Mets ace Johan Santana has yet to pitch an inning in spring training as he had some pains in his throwing arm. He claimed that it was because the pitching staff was working him too hard so early in the season.
