How to Survive in a Down Economy

A down economy doesn’t have to be a disaster for everyone. Unemployment rises, but the vast majority of the workforce keeps their jobs. If you haven’t overextended yourself on the mortgage front or on your credit card debt, then you may hardly notice the down economy at all. The interest rate on your savings account will drop, but then cheaper mortgages and loans will be available as well.

It makes sense, however, to be careful at times of greater uncertainty. Now would not be the time to take financial risks. There are many ways you can make sensible economies that would enable you to save a little more, just in case bad news does come along. Having a reserve fund available takes the stress out of day-to-day living. Eat take away instead of going to restaurants for meals, rent DVDs instead of going to the movies. Walk or maybe use a bicycle for short journeys. Use the bus or the subway instead of a taxi. Check eBay or Craigslist for any housing items you need. All of these things are fun as well as a way of saving money.

If you run your own business, you must prepare for a drop off in turnover in a down economy. Keeping the customer happy is your biggest priority. That will bring you word of mouth business from referrals from your satisfied clients. Return business from existing customers is also a crucial factor in surviving a downturn.

Above all, be sensible about your costs and expenditure. Don’t borrow more to pay for the debts you already have. If you have problems speak to your creditors, if you tell them in advance of your difficulties they will help you. Finally, don’t panic. Trim your outgoings as much as you can and hang in there. Down economies always end eventually, and better times come along.
