The team now known as the Arizona Cardinals used to be called the Phoenix Cardinals. The Phoenix Cardinals moved from St. Louis in 1988 to Tempe, AZ, a suburb of Phoenix. All of their home games were played at the Arizona State University's Sun Devil Stadium.
The Cardinals are in the Western Division of the NFC, or National Football Conference, in the NFL, or the National Football League. From 1988-1993, the team was known as the Phoenix Cardinals. During that time, 1988-1989, the head coach was Gene Stallings, and Hank Kuhlmann was the coach the year after that. Hank Kuhlmann’s record was 0-5-0, and Joe Bugel’s record was 20-44-0 for games won and lost, for regular and playoff season.
Some of the 1st draft picks on the team were Tony Sacca who played quarterback, Eric Swann who played defensive end, Joe Wolf played guard, Ken Harvey and Eric Hill both played linebackers, and Anthony Thompson and Garrison Hearst played running backs. In their 1st season, they achieved a record for single game attendance and one for season attendance. The Cardinals colors are red and white and the red cardinal bird is their mascot. When they became the Phoenix Cardinals they added the Arizona sate flag to the sleeves of their uniforms and, in 1990, changed their pants from white to red. The helmets have just the red cardinal head on the sides.
The Cardinals were started in 1898 in Chicago, IL and have been a part of the professional American football club since then. They changed their name from Phoenix Cardinals to Arizona Cardinals for marketing reasons and are still the Arizona Cardinals who made it to the Super Bowl this year.
