In Texas, high school football is like a religion. The lights from the stadium give off a glow that tells all the surrounding area that it is that time again. These young men battle for every yard like it was their last, and wear their school colors like a badge of honor. This is Texas high school football!
When you look for the best team in Texas, you must determine what makes a team the best. Is it their record this year or their overall record through the years? Is it the number of state championships they have won? Or is it the fact that they won the state championship this year? Looking over all the facts, the Amarillo High School Golden Sandstorm is a strong contender for the title of best high school football program in Texas.
With 698 wins and 46 playoff appearances through the 2007 season, the Golden Sandstorm are one of the most successful teams in all of Texas. Amarillo High School has had coaches from all backgrounds. Some coaches came to Amarillo and left for bigger positions, but while they were there they instilled the Golden Sandstorm pride. One coach, Bum Phillips, eventually went to coach in the NFL. Larry Dippel came in and took over a program that was regressing from its glory days. When Dippel took over, the Golden Sandstorm were in the middle of a serious playoff drought. Dippel guided the program back to glory and led them to 23 straight playoff appearances. He retired in 2005.
It's difficult to be a consistent winner in football at any level, but the commitment of the players and coaches at Amarillo High School through the years has shown that it is possible.
