There are a lot of people out there that are strong believers that truck drivers are the modern day versions of cowboys, and there are a couple reasons behind this idea. First, early day cowboys did a lot of traveling around the country on horseback. Today, truck drivers do a lot of traveling around the country in an 18 wheeler truck.
In the past a cowboy would use a couple horses when moving a few hundred head of cattle around the country. Truck drivers no use 350 to 450 horses, which are in the form of horse power, to move a mere 20 to 30 head of cattle. Original cowboys would not really know how to handle a loss of cattle, but would always try to make up for their mistakes. Truck drivers find themselves rarely making mistakes and always making it to their destination on time. Another difference is that the cook used to travel with the cowboys, but now you go to the cook.
When the cowboy took cattle from Salt Lake to Denver they took a month. The modern cowboy goes there in 10 hours. Also, in the past, rustlers would follow a herd in order to steal cattle from it. Today, there are people who will hijack your truck, pull off your trailer and replace it with a look-a-like, even down to the numbers on the trailer.
Truck drivers often like to think of themselves as the old time cowboy, who enjoys roaming all over the land. The lifestyle is thought to be romantic, seeing as you move around and live out your dreams. This may be why so many people are drawn to driving an 18 wheeler truck.
