History of the Phoenix Cardinals

Phoenix CardinalsOver the course of history, the Phoenix Cardinals have been called many names before reaching the name they have today. They have been known as the Morgan Athletic Club, Normals, Racine Cardinals, Chicago Cardinals, St. Louis Cardinals, and Phoenix Cardinals. They are also the oldest professional football franchise that is still around today. The team was formed in 1898 in Chicago.

Charles W. Bidwill Sr. bought the team in 1933 for $50,000. After Bidwill died in 1947, his wife took the helm until 1962, when his two sons took over. The team's years in Chicago were dismal, with only 33 wins over the course of ten years. The last year in Chicago was 1959, and their record was 2-10. The team performed much better after their move to St. Louis. The St. Louis Cardinals won the NFC East in 1974 and 1975.

The team was moved to Arizona in 1988 and was renamed the Phoenix Cardinals. The 1990s were plagued with defeat. The Cardinals had their best season in 2008, with Kurt Warner as quarterback. The Super Bowl loss to the Pittsburg Steelers was a battle well fought. After years of moving across the country, the Cardinals have found a home in Arizona.

The Cardinals were in the East Conference for most of their existence. The league was divided into the conferences in 1953, and the Cardinals in the East because of their location in Chicago. When the AFL and NFL merged in 1970, the Cardinals were placed in the NFC East. The team was finally moved to the NFC West Conference in 2002, over a decade after their relocation to Arizona.
