Each and every year all 32 National Football League teams compete in 4 pre-season games and 16 regular season games with the hope of making the playoffs and eventually the Super Bowl. The 2008 season’s Super Bowl hopes became a reality for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals. The Super Bowl was played on February 1st, 2009 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL. The Arizona Cardinals went into Super Bowl XLIII as the underdogs and suffered a disappointing loss, 23-27.
The Steelers ended their regular season and playoffs with a record of 15-4 and were well known for their powerful defense, which pulled through in the Super Bowl with an interception for a touchdown. The Steelers offense played equally as well. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger threw for 256 yards and had 1 interception and 1 very important touchdown to Santonio Holmes, which ultimately led to the Steelers victory. Santonio Holmes was given the coveted MVP Award for the Super Bowl, after receiving 131 yards and 1 touchdown. The Steelers rushing games were low, but still effective with Willie Parker rushing for 53 yards.
The Arizona Cardinals played a tough defense with great success, as they did throughout the playoffs. Kurt Warner led the Cardinals with 377 yards passing, 3 touchdowns and threw 1 interception. The bulk of the passing yards went to all-star receiver Larry Fitzgerald, who received 127 yards and had 2 touchdowns. Fellow receivers Anquan Boldin and Steve Breaston combined to receive 155 yards. Many fans feel that the Cardinals may have lost, but gained respect in the league.
