The Closure of Guantanamo Bay

Guantanamo BayThe closure of Guantanamo Bay detention camp has been hailed as one of the greatest decision by the Obama administration and also a new dawn for justice. However, the question remains as to where the remaining detainees will be held. Many believe that the new administration will hold the remaining terrorist suspects in facilities within the United States.

This worries many Americans because it will be unsafe keeping them in normal prison facilities within the United State, and no state is ready to accept notorious terrorist suspects into their prisons. Challenges also remain as to who must be released. It is unknown how many of the remaining detainees can face trial, and what form of trial should be used to convict them.

It is well known that most of the prisoners in Guantanamo Bay require longer incarceration for public safety, although a lot of them have been cleared for release to other countries by the Bush administration. Resettling these enemy combatants in any state within the US or any country outside the US will require great diplomatic and congressional approval. The public reaction would have to amount to approval as well. The trial of these detainees in any federal court will require evidence admissible by the trial judges.

The closure of Guantanamo Bay by Obama is a welcome development, as it has proved to the world that the United States is against torture. However, it will take a lot of adjustments by the administration and the people of the United States to make it work.
