Las Vegas is known to many as a city of action, with luxury hotels, fine dining, gambling and brilliant shows. But the city of Las Vegas has much more to offer than just gambling and bright lights. It is an old city with a lot of history behind it.
Las Vegas was discovered back in the early 1800s by a group of Mexican men who gave the city its name. In Spanish, Las Vegas means "the meadows". Over the years, Las Vegas continued to grow and became a very popular gambling spot for many because Nevada was the last state in the west where gambling was not illegal. However, this came to a halt when a law to ban gambling from Nevada passed in 1910.
While the ban was in effect, the growth and economic status of Las Vegas halted to a standstill. No progress was made for several decades. Everything changed with the introduction of the Hoover Dam in 1936. The completion of the dam increased the overall population of the Vegas area, and shortly after, the gambling ban was lifted. Gambling has been legal in the city ever since.
Over the years, hotels continued to go up and much of Las Vegas was filled with them and casinos. There has always been speculation about organized crime and mafia connections existing in Las Vegas, and some arrests have been made throughout the course of history. With all the money coming and going through the city, it wasn’t often that criminal activity was caught.
