Nursing Home Living

There are many myths about living in a nursing home. You must remember that it is not a hospital and does not have the same rules as a hospital. The people who live in nursing homes are not considered patients, but residents.

Nursing homes want to make their residents feel at home so they will be able to have items in the rooms that they are familiar with, like family pictures and other favorite items. The residents' rooms are their private place and should be considered that by staff and visitors alike. When you are in a nursing center, you will be encouraged to go to the dining room where you can eat and visit with the other residents.

Many people have the wrong idea about nursing centers. Even though there are a number of people living there, this facility will be clean and smell nice.

People residing in nursing homes will be able to have as much independence as possible, they have a right to take part in their medical decisions and in the activities in which they choose to participate. Residents also have resident councils where they are able to voice their opinions about what they believe should be changed and the things they like.

If a husband and wife need to go into a nursing facility and want to share a room, they may do so. This makes them feel more comfortable and secure.

The cost of a nursing home seems to be rather expensive, but you need to consider that the cost includes room and board, personal care and medical care, having health staff on duty 24 hours a day, and planned activities.

It should be noted that not all nursing homes meet the standards you specify. I know from personal experience they do not all smell nice and some even treat patients poorly. Investigate your nursing home before you put your mom in one.
