The 1950s was a new beginning, a time when golf became a booming sport loved by all. People in the fifties had more leisure time and they embraced golf as their newest sport of leisure. With the excitement of this new found sport came the excitement of high money tournament purses. The sport was no longer just for the very rich, but for everyone who wanted to get in on the excitement and the money. Everyone wanted to get in on the glory of the professional tour, the fame and the money.
In 1950, the LPGA is founded, the Ladies Professional Golf Association. It was time for women to play a sport and be recognized around the world professionally for their participation. The LPGA was founded by thirteen women, which among that group are Babe Didrikson, Patty Berg and Louise Suggs. The Tampa Open was the starting location of the first official event on the LPGA Tour. Then, there were the men like Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, who became millionaires from prize money and endorsement dollars from golf. The PGA, or Professional Golf Association, was the men’s division. Sam Snead won eleven events on the PGA Tour in 1950 and was the last golfer to post double-digit victories in one season.
Yes, the 1950s was a time of fun, for both men and women, in this new fangled sport called golf.
