The Arizona Cardinals have played under a number of different names since their inception in 1889. They are the oldest professional football team in the United States. They started out in Chicago being called the Morgan Athletic Club. Their name was changed shortly after that to the Racine Normals.
In 1920 they became the Chicago Cardinals and won the championship in 1925 and 1947. They have not won a championship in 61 years. Only the Chicago Cubs baseball team, who has not won a World Series in more years than that, surpasses this astounding detail.
From Chicago the Cardinals moved to St. Louis where they played for 27 years before arriving in Phoenix, Arizona. Once there their name was changed once again, this time to the Phoenix Cardinals. They played under this name for five years before they became the Arizona Cardinals.
The team made an appearance in the playoffs in the 1998 season and was beaten in the second round by the Minnesota Vikings. Since that time the team struggled every year, until Ken Whisenhunt took over as head coach in 2007. That season ended with them at 8 wins and 8 losses. In 2008, they clinched their division title in early December and once again went on to the playoffs. They were the underdog in every playoff game, and shocked the country when they won all three to advance, for the first time in the club’s history, to the Super Bowl game.
The Super Bowl was played February 1st in Tampa, Florida and the Cardinals lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers 27 to 23.
